JONATHAN CHERRY: What got you started with photography?

TONY KATAI: Back in 2005 a buddy of mine gave me an old nikon film camera, then everything blossomed up from that point.

JC: Any emerging artists inspiring you at the moment?

TK: I don’t follow too many photographers but I enjoy photographs from Brittany Nicole Fabry and Nathan Ward.

JC: Whats your current project all about?

TK: I’ve recently began filming a short film series, something along the lines of a futuristic horror theme.

JC: Where are you currently living and how is it shaping you?

TK: Detroit, MI; I moved out when I was 17 and i’ve been living here for just about 3 years now. New York & Chicago do not even compare to Detroit. It’s an urban jungle, full of great people and it doesn’t have the fast paced vibe of most major cities. Detroit is chill.

JC: One piece of advice to recent photography graduates?

TK: Travel.

JC: Any big plans for 2012?

TK: Starting up Detroit’s own Marijauna Magazine. Thinking of calling it Blowin’ Kush. It will include informational articles on growing, interviews with growers, photographs of beautiful women in grow rooms. Basically high times, but a more local version. Should be fun.

JC: Favourite tree?

TK: Weeping willow.
